Meet One of America's First Nissan Platinum Technicians at United Nissan Reno

In the world of automotive care, the difference between a good and a great experience often traces back to the expertise of the technician under the hood. It’s a familiar narrative to anyone who’s ever faced the stress of car troubles: the right technician can turn a day of frustration into a story of relief and satisfaction.

At United Nissan Reno, we’re honored to house some of the best of the best who offer this peace of mind to our customers. Among our team is an individual who represents the pinnacle of automotive expertise: Kenny Hung, a Nissan Platinum Technician—a recognition shared by only a select few nationwide.

This rare designation is more than just a badge of honor; it's a promise to our customers that they're in the best hands possible. We sat down with Kenny to explore his journey to achieving Nissan's esteemed Platinum Technician status, shedding light on the dedication and precision that sets him apart in providing exceptional automotive care.

How did you get started in automotive?

KH: I started as a detailer back in 2003 because of a friend. He was a technician here at United Nissan Reno at the time, and my cousin also joined to be a detailer right before me, so I decided to join, too. I started from the bottom and worked my way up. The General Manager sent me to training at the local community college, where I earned my degree. From there, I became a Lube Technician, then a Technician, a Master Technician, and now I’m a Nissan Platinum Technician.

Were you always interested in cars?

KH: It was all new to me. I remember I was just learning how to drive a manual when I started here. Before becoming a detailer, I worked in the service industry at a fast-food restaurant and I also worked part-time as an electrician, so I did have some electronic knowledge.

What made you want to continue a career in automotive?

KH: It grew on me. The General Manager here saw there was something different about me, and he sent me to training, which gave me a different path. Technician school was a 2-year program. I worked during the day and went to school at night for 3 to 4 days a week. The 2-year program is for basic general technicians. It gives you an idea of the safety procedures, daily operations, engine, transmission, and things like that. To become a master tech, you need Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification. There are 8 levels to that, A1 - A8.

How long did it take you to get through A1-A8 and L1?

KH: I started my basic training in 2006 and it took me 12 years to become a master tech. In 2019, I became L1 certified. You also have to get recertification every few years, which means retaking these tests.

How did you become a Nissan Platinum Technician?

KH: The Nissan Platinum Technician training is new to our Nissan Technician Training Program. It was invite-only to a few pre-selected technicians nationwide. Our instructor mentioned that they had originally sent out 8 invitations, but only 7 of us responded and attended. It was only a handful of people. To be invited, you needed ASE L1 certification and Intelligent Mobility System and CAN system training classes.

What did the Nissan Platinum Training entail and how does the help with your day-to-day work?

KH: The Nissan Platinum training involved utilizing a new tool we have to diagnose cars. It’s quicker and more accurate. On a day-to-day basis, I can diagnose issues with much greater speed and precision. This not only enhances our efficiency at the dealership but also improves the experience for our customers. It means that cars are not just fixed right, but fixed right the first time, minimizing downtime for our customers and getting them back on the road quickly.

Not every tech becomes a master. What made you want to keep growing?

KH: There is always something new to learn. Nowadays, our phones are upgraded and replaced each year. With vehicles, we’ve come a long way too. There is a lot to learn each year and I believe that if there’s something to learn out there, then I should learn it.

You’ve been a Nissan tech for over 20 years – what’s made you stay?

KH: There have been offers to other manufacturers, but I still feel like there is a lot to learn with Nissan. I have amazing teachers here at United Nissan Reno, and I’d like to keep learning with them. I say to myself, “I may not be good at everything, but I want to be really good at one thing.” Before the training invitation, I thought to myself, “Am I at the top of my field?” When I got the invite, it made me realize that maybe I’m not and there’s always something new to learn.

Is there any higher training now? What's next?

KH: The automotive industry is moving in a different direction with electric vehicles. Nissan plans to extend the EV side, like a lot of manufacturers. There is definitely still more to understand on the technology side. For example, hands-free driving or self-driving cars in the future. Our industry is growing and I’m excited to keep growing with it.

Outside of work, what do you like to do in your free time?

KH: I do like racing and Formula One, I’ve been watching that for years. I’ve been a fan of Daniel Ricciardo since he started. I am also a fan of Mark Webber.  Both are Australian and really consistent. And of course, not to mention the late Ayrton Senna who was my childhood hero.
