As 2023 draws to a close, we not only bid farewell to another year but also to a legendary Nissan nameplate. After 42 years, Nissan is halting production of the Maxima. This decision, says Nissan spokesperson Ashli Bobo, stems from the brand's prioritization of electric vehicles.
But as one chapter ends, another begins. The end of the Maxima's production is more than a conclusion to a model; it's a hint at what's to come - a future where electric vehicles take center stage, blending Nissan's rich heritage with cutting-edge technology and eco-friendly innovation. The Nissan Maxima is ending production as we know it, but in 2025 the nameplate will reappear as an electric sedan, borrowing much of its styling from the IMs concept that debuted back in 2019.
The 2025 Nissan Maxima is not just a replacement but a bold statement of Nissan's commitment to sustainable mobility. While official details have yet to be released, here is what drivers can expect from the 2025 vehicle:
The 2025 model year will be completely reinvented, and it's expected to retain little from its predecessor beyond the four-door configuration. As the current generation concludes its production run this year, the Maxima brand will briefly pause in 2024, allowing Nissan to strategically reorganize its lineup.
It’s expected that the 2025 Maxima will draw design inspiration from Nissan's IMs concept, characterized by a striking blend of sharp angles and sleek, slender lighting elements. Nissan has described this concept as an "elevated sports sedan," suggesting a fusion of luxury and EV performance in the upcoming Maxima's design language.
Many also anticipate the 2025 Nissan Maxima will incorporate e-4ORCE powertrain elements from the all-electric Nissan Ariya SUV. Production of this next-generation sedan is slated to begin in 2025 and Nissan’s manufacturing facility in Canton, Mississippi.
Few details are officially known, but reports from Car and Driver speculate that “the 2025 Nissan Maxima will ride on the company's CMF-EV platform, which is shared with partners Renault and Mitsubishi and currently underpins the Ariya.”
While the 2023 Maxima will no longer be produced after this year, drivers can expect many to stay in circulation for the next decade due to the vehicle’s highly reliable build. The 4-Door Sports Car, as Nissan calls it, stands out as a dynamic blend of power, tech, and luxury. The 2023 Nissan Maxima is available in SV, SR, and Platinum grades, with a starting MSRP of $38,140.
Under the hood lies a robust 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 300 horsepower, ensuring a powerful yet smooth drive. Coupled with this potent engine is Nissan's Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). This ensures a smoother ride and contributes to the Maxima's impressive fuel efficiency, offering up to 20/30 MPG city/highway.
Plus, with 261 lb-ft of torque, the Maxima offers responsive acceleration, making it adept at both urban commuting and highway cruising.
The 2023 Maxima also boasts a well-tuned suspension system. The SR trim, in particular, features a sport-tuned suspension that balances ride comfort with agile handling. This model also includes a larger rear stabilizer bar, which helps reduce body roll during cornering, providing a more connected and engaging driving experience.
The Maxima's bold style and sporty driving dynamics are complemented by a host of useful technology features. The sports sedan includes a cargo space of 14.3 cu. ft., providing ample room for luggage and essentials. Inside, the Maxima is a haven of luxury and technology, featuring a standard Nissan Safety Shield 360 for enhanced peace of mind.
The NissanConnect system with an 8-inch color display includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside a Wi-Fi hotspot and smartwatch compatibility. The interior is adorned with a D-shaped steering wheel, satin chrome trim, and ambient lighting in the SR and SV models.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard across all models, including features like Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Warning. Also available is the class-exclusive Intelligent Around View Monitor, available in SR and Platinum models, which provides a 360-degree view for easier. The Maxima's commitment to safety is also evident, as it is rated an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK+ for the 2022 model.
While the 2023 Nissan Maxima sets a high bar in performance and comfort, the 2025 Maxima promises to elevate this legacy to new heights. The transition from the well-loved, traditional Maxima to its electric successor symbolizes a significant shift in Nissan’s future of embracing sustainability without compromising on performance and luxury.
